Support to farmers

Group of farmers

One-on-one

Goal

To explore alternative scenarios and stimulate strategic thinking by asking “what if” questions that challenge assumptions and open up new possibilities.

Description

The What If tool is a reflective and imaginative method that helps farmers, advisors, and other AKIS actors explore future possibilities. By posing hypothetical questions—such as “What if we stopped using synthetic fertilisers?” or “What if our farm had to halve its emissions by 2030?”—participants are encouraged to think creatively and critically about their current practices, future goals, and potential risks.

The tool can be used:

  • To initiate strategic discussions
  • As a warm-up for planning or innovation workshops
  • To identify opportunities and barriers
  • To support decision-making under uncertainty

It is particularly useful when combined with tools like the Robustness ScanBackcasting, or Innovation Spiral.

Tips for use:

  • Encourage bold and imaginative thinking—there are no wrong answers
  • Use real challenges or trends to anchor the scenarios
  • Facilitate group sharing to surface diverse perspectives
  • Document insights and revisit them during planning
