Group of farmers
One-on-one
To gather grassroots ideas from farmers and trigger and inspire other farmers.
Boerenbond Projects has a long-standing tradition of organising the Innovation Contest, a biennial competition that invites farmers to share their grassroot innovative ideas—whether they are early-stage concepts, projects in development, or fully realised innovations.
The contest runs for several months, with a widespread call for entries promoted through Boerenbond’s professional magazine and incorporated into training sessions provided by Boerenbond Projects advisors. After the submission phase, an initial selection is made, and the shortlisted farms receive on-site visits from two advisors with different expertise. Their insights are compiled into assessment reports, which help refine the final selection.
A jury—comprising researchers, farmers, and representatives from NGOs and the media—then evaluates the selected entries. Ultimately, five outstanding innovations are chosen as winners.
The contest culminates in Innovation Evenings held across the provinces, where farmers gather for an inspiring programme featuring a keynote speaker, engaging entertainment, and, most importantly, the official announcement of the winners. The winning farmers present their innovations, and the public's favourite is awarded a special prize during the final event.
Beyond the recognition and prize money, the winners receive innovation support from Boerenbond Projects advisors, helping them take the next steps in bringing their innovations to life.
This contest is more than just a competition—it is a platform that triggers and inspires farmers, fostering a culture of creativity and progress in agriculture.
