Dinner Hack

Phases of the Innovation Cycle

Initial idea → Inspiration

Inspiration → Planning

Support to farmers

Group of farmers

Goal

To collaboratively generate ideas related to food by bringing together diverse stakeholders during the preparation and enjoyment of a shared dinner, fostering discussion and exploring potential solutions together.

Description

An informal gathering of around 20-25 participants from across the entire value chain with diverse expertise and backgrounds. The process consists of the following steps:

  1. Preparation: Participants collaborate to prepare dinner together.
  2. First Brainstorm Session: Small groups (4-5 people) generate ideas, list them, and select a focus.
  3. Dinner Break: Participants enjoy the meal.
  4. Second Brainstorm Session: Groups further develop selected ideas into concrete concepts.
  5. Feedback: The entire group provides feedback, and the best idea may be selected through a collective vote.

To ensure the Dinner Hack runs smoothly, participants work with a concrete question. An example from the agricultural organization Boerenbond in Belgium:
"On a 3-hectare plot just south of Gent, we want to sow protein-rich crops for human consumption. Through which (new) products and/or services and via which channels could this become a profitable venture for every link in the chain?"
