Goal

To facilitate inclusive group dialogue and participatory decision-making processes by combining verbal expression with physical movement, ensuring that all voices—including minority perspectives—are heard and valued.

Description

The Deep Democracy Dialogue is a process-oriented method that combines structured conversation with physical movement in the room. Participants stand in a circle or move to designated spots in the room to express agreement, disagreement, or uncertainty. This method helps surface hidden tensions, minority views, and emotional undercurrents.

This physical engagement:

  • Makes invisible dynamics visible (e.g. resistance, tension, enthusiasm).
  • Encourages embodied participation and emotional awareness.
  • Breaks hierarchical patterns and fosters equality in dialogue.

Key elements include:

  • Check-in Circle: Participants stand and respond to open questions like “How are you here today?” or “What’s important for you today?”
  • Spreading the No: Participants physically move to express disagreement or discomfort, making resistance visible and discussable.
  • Consent-Based Decision Making: Instead of seeking consensus, participants reflect on whether they can “go along with” a proposal, even if it’s not their preferred option.
  • Iceberg Model & Resistance Line: Visual metaphors help participants explore what lies beneath the surface—emotions, assumptions, and unspoken dynamics.
